Like an onion.

Calgary’s weather is still a mystery every day. Starts off cold, warms up mid-day, cools off by the time you leave work again…. it makes for an interesting challenge to dress yourself and get out the door. The solution here: Layers! Lots and lots of layers that work together and make subtle changes to your look. I started with a light short sleeve blouse, then a cardigan, a leather jacket and a large chunky scarf. One by one, I peeled off a layer throughout the day  (and then gradually put them all back on). Pick layers that can work on their own or together in any combination. Layers are also great if you need to ‘dress up’ after work or change your look throughout the day for meetings or lunch dates. But don’t complain about layers….pretty soon they won’t be necessary and it will be warm sweaters every day.

Wax on.

I did it. I bought wax (aka coated) jeans. I gotta admit – I’m in love. These are by Current/Elliott, are a beautiful, rich chocolate brown and very comfy. Perfect to carry me into fall. Coated jeans have a sheen like leather look without being leather. They add just a bit of interest to a basic pant. They’ve been around for a couple years now but this fall they are really hitting the fashion scene again. I haven’t always been a fan of Current/Elliott jeans as I have found their proportion between thigh fit and waist fit to be totally off. That seems to have been corrected with this cut. Paired here with a pale pink tunic blouse by Joie and some nude pumps. Fall fashion makes me so excited – especially when the magazine stands are full of fall issues so heavy you can hardly carry them. LOVE!

Shades of Grey.

Grey is IN and it’s hitting the denim scene for fall. These J.Brand jeans are a great neutral and the perfect alternative to blue (and all it’s shades). There are various grey tones out there, but I love the classic medium wash of these ones in particular. True heather grey is often a difficult shade to find in any clothing. I saw these and knew they were the perfect pair for all of the outfits I was putting together in my mind. Paired here with some black accent pieces to keep a simple, neutral tone. Adding a cream bag as a pop of highlight ties it all together.

Off for holidays tomorrow – stay tuned in the coming days for ‘What I Packed’ while spending some RnR time in cottage country.
