A Little Bit Country.

Ok, but mostly Rock ‘n’ Roll. As I’ve mentioned, I am a 90’s rock chick….always will be. In the past few years, my husband and I have opened up a bit more to the country music scene and let a few bands into our listening rotation. We recently went to see Zac Brown Band in concert. I have to admit… it was pretty good (although the highlight for me was when they covered a Metallica tune). Obviously there was a wardrobe dilemma for me in attending an event like this. Staying true to my rock ‘n’ roll genes, I went for an all black look with touches of country. These low western boots are the greatest country piece I own. They are by Freebird and the detail on them is amazing (I threw in a leg kick so you get a better idea). You can add or subtract bands of leather and fabric or even jewellery to them to change them up. I felt my tank had a bit of western flare to it to help me fit in with the country crowd. All in all, a pretty great night. Concert season has definitely begun….stay tuned for future shows coming up!

It’s Here!

Today is the first day it really has felt like FALL! Cooler weather from morning till night means boots + sweaters. Two of my favourite things. I love the feeling of a soft, comfortable sweater and my boot collection just got a good dusting off. Sweaters for fall can be oversized and extra long – look for cable knits this season too! I prefer to wear tights with boots instead of jeans. It’s just a cleaner, more comfortable look. Jeans get baggy and crumpled up around the ankles, but make sure you pull some socks over top to try and keep them in place. Happy cooler temps!

Leather Tee.

Today’s post is brought to you by the leather tee. I’m a tad in love with this piece. Laser cut edging and a loose fit – this black leather piece is easy to wear and easy to pair. It can be dressed down or dressed up and matches almost any bottom. Touches of leather are big for fall – especially in pants and trimmed accents/details. I wore it here with a black blazer in a crepe material for a contrast in fabrics. This tee would also be great with a longer cardigan – maybe in a tan or cream colour. Also a great piece for a fall skirt with tights…..endless options really.

Camouflage is everywhere for fall 2013… especially in my closet. With a bit of an edgy feel, pairing camo with a more conservative or preppy outfit is a great contrast. This simple and light jacket is an easy-to-wear accent piece to any outfit. Camo actually matches or compliments a ton of solid colours as well as prints. Adding ONE piece of camo to an outfit will pull you into the fall trend, however avoid the head to toe look. The idea is for a touch (either in a t-shirt, a pant, a jacket or even a clutch), but not all of them together….unless you actually are hunting and trying not to be seen. There can be too much of a good thing when it comes to this trend, so start off small.

Sporty Weekend.

Weekends are usually filled with errands, workouts, time outdoors and good food. When I’m out running around, I like to be comfortable and wear clothes that are easy. Right now with the weather being extreme highs and lows (in the same day), it’s great to dress in comfy layers. I love a puffy vest for the fall and decided to change up how I wore it this weekend by throwing it over a simple tank as an extra layer for the morning. I saw this on Lululemon’s social media and had to copy the look. And…you can never go wrong with a pair of Chucks… they go with everything and are a staple in any girl’s (or guy’s) wardrobe. Hope you had a relaxing, comfy weekend!

Olive and Silk.

New colour for fall: Olive! A great accessory colour and also a great new nail polish option that I am most definitely going to try once the leaves start to drop. This olive bag is by Joie and has expandable sides for extra room (needed). Paired here with a sleeveless silk blouse with embroidered detail which is a great layering piece and such a comfortable fabric (also by Joie). As you already know, I do love a giant scarf and this one by Wilfred is huge. My husband opened it up all the way and said ‘are you kidding me?’. It really is comprable to a blanket, but when looped around, tucked in and tied up, it is one versatile piece.  Olive and silk – sounds like the start of a great fall season (or how I’d describe an amazing martini).

Wax on.

I did it. I bought wax (aka coated) jeans. I gotta admit – I’m in love. These are by Current/Elliott, are a beautiful, rich chocolate brown and very comfy. Perfect to carry me into fall. Coated jeans have a sheen like leather look without being leather. They add just a bit of interest to a basic pant. They’ve been around for a couple years now but this fall they are really hitting the fashion scene again. I haven’t always been a fan of Current/Elliott jeans as I have found their proportion between thigh fit and waist fit to be totally off. That seems to have been corrected with this cut. Paired here with a pale pink tunic blouse by Joie and some nude pumps. Fall fashion makes me so excited – especially when the magazine stands are full of fall issues so heavy you can hardly carry them. LOVE!

Bits and Pieces.

Sometimes when I just don’t know what to wear, I look back at outfits I’ve worn or look to pictures online for inspiration. It’s amazing what different combos you can put together. Sometimes it’s as simple as taking this top with that bottom to mix up an outfit for a brand new look. All of the pieces here have been featured in past posts but they are paired together here here for a new mix of colour and pattern. I’ve also been layering accessories like necklaces and bracelets to change things up. Different combinations on a stacked wrist or a few necklaces paired together can make older pieces feel new again. Take a look through your closet and try to put things together you might not have considered before. I bet you’ll see your existing wardrobe in a whole new light.

My collection of scarves is something I’m actually proud of 🙂 Possibly an addiction, but throwing on a scarf can just change a whole look or tie a look together. Right now in Calgary, the mornings are chilly but the days are hot. It makes for tricky dressing decisions. Scarves fix that in an instant. A simple black tank and dark blue zipper jeans + a favourite new fall scarf (this one is arguably a blanket) and I was set for the day. My husband decided to take the top off the Jeep and wrapping this scarf around me on a cold summer morning felt just perfect. Peeling it off by mid-day and I transitioned into the heat. There are several ways to tie a scarf but it usually depends on the size. This one is so huge that I just throw it around my neck and keep tucking it in until I can see infront of me. No right or wrong. Here is a great link to a video on youtube.

Cottage Living.

Where did the summer go? With good intentions, I thought I would be able to blog on our cottage vacation, but lack of internet connection and a forgetful mind for taking photos of outfits… and poof, holidays are over and we’re back to real life. I did manage to have my husband grab a few shots of one classic summer wilderness ensemble. Cottage country (and summer in general) is all about comfort for day and coziness for night. I packed a lot of denim shorts, flanel tops, plain tanks and cozy scarves for cooler nights. Slip-on shoes for quick get-a-ways to the dock & boat and a couple bathing suits suitable for cannon balls into the lake. Here I threw on some boyfriend jean shorts, classic plaid top with rolled sleeves, my favourite Birkenstocks and a cozy scarf for night. Here’s to amazing sunny holidays and the last few weeks of summer!
