Ok, so maybe a misleading title for this entry….but it WAS my birthday and this WAS my ‘suit’. I love birthdays – especially mine 🙂 . Growing up, my family always made a big deal out of birthdays (still do) and my husband is the same. He always has perfect (and meaningful) surprises for me. This year we went for a romantic dinner to the restaurant where we got married. Usually most people are out of town for the summer when my bday rolls around, so my husband secretly had friends send in videos wishing me a happy birthday and he put them together in a montage for me to watch. SO sweet! The evening was just perfect and I wore a simple black dress. I love over-accessorizing (when the time is right) and decided on a few layering necklaces for a statement and focal point of the outfit. Picked out some understated nude pumps and I was ready to ring in another amazing year.

Maxi dresses are easy. That’s why they’re so great for summer. Throw on, accessorize and go. This classic long black maxi has a racerback and is made of a stretchy jersey. Finding maxi dresses that are long enough for 5’9″ is not an easy thing – but this one is plenty long. I love to play around with different looks when starting with a basic like this. You can totally change the style just by adding a different belt or a crop denim jacket. OR, you can just keep it simple and wear it as-is with a great statement necklace. Missing the summer heat this week, but hoping to be able to sport some other summer dresses soon.

Blush (or nude to some) is such a soft, feminine colour. It seems to be everywhere lately. I sign up for quite a few emails to retailers I love and I’ve been receiving messages solely about blush tones for summer. It’s one of those shades that works on untanned or tanned skin and just makes you feel pretty. It was also the perfect shade (and word) for a night out with my husband. He recreated our first date together to celebrate 9 months of marriage on the eve before my stepsons joined us for 6 weeks of summer. With a word like blush, a low back tank, some heels and his favourite jeans on me, it made for a pretty simple style for a pretty romantic night.

Punk floral – that’s a ‘borrowed’ description from J.Crew but don’t you just love the way that sounds? This large print cashmere sweater is one of my favourite colours with pops of bright, fun flowers. I love little details in clothing and this sweater has a few buttons on one of the shoulders and one extra flower in the back (not shown here). A great summer piece for days that are a bit cooler (or evenings). Pairs well with skinny jeans in many colours. Gotta love versatility in clothing!

Oh white pants. It’s a love-hate relationship. I love how crisp and clean they look, but you do have to be careful about a few things when selecting and wearing them. First, I usually go up one size when I buy white skinnies. There is something about white jeans that are too tight on the leg that make you feel (and look) like you are wearing leg casts. Just a bit more room helps to not feel like you’re totally on display (especially in the underwear department). No matter the thong, you always need to make sure your white jeans are not see-through. And please, please, pick a light colour or nude thong. A good test for how see-through white pants are is to look at the pockets. If you can see the front pockets through the fabric, the pants are too transparent. White pants are also usually a one time wear before you need to wash them. They show everything! Don’t think too hard about not spilling on yourself – or else you definitely will. Just like I did today.

Summer and heat are all about being comfortable for me. I love easy outfits that are light and not tight. This loose art-deco blouse has a thin racerback cut ( which helps to keep you cool). Paired with easy boyfriend cut cotton pants (with the cuffs rolled up a couple times) and a thin yellow belt. Throw on your favourite sandals and a messenger bag and you’re ready to enjoy the sun. I also love not completely drying my hair (mostly because I can’t tolerate the heat from my blow dryer for that long) and letting it airdry for some nice beachy waves. Easy breezy.

I love my shorts short, but average length are usually even shorter on me. High hips and long legs have always been my blessing and curse. Finding bottoms that fit properly are a challenge when you have a 34″+ inseam. When it comes to shorts (and skirts) – they just look that much shorter. I use to be self conscious about things being too short, but you learn to embrace what you have and get over it. I also love high heels and platform shoes. Again, when you’re 5’9″ you have moments of being self conscious about being a giant and only wanting to wear flats. But, with time, you learn to work with what you have and wear what you love. This simple summer outfit felt fresh. I felt tall and my shorts felt short. I embraced it.

As the heat continues, so does the dusting off of summer favourites. Open toe shoes are a classic style – but like everything, they get a fresh update each year. These booties (by Rag & Bone) sport open toes and a chunky heel. Shorts, skirts, cropped colour denim….the options for pairing are endless. I put them together with this leather skirt and simple tank (monochromatic) to give a bit of focus to my new favourite shoes.
