Crochet.

I’ll admit that this sweater looks and feels a bit like a reusable bag you would bring to a market to buy your fruits and veggies. But I still love it. Crochet garments have come and gone over the years and it seems to be on an upswing for 2013.  I like how airy crochet can feel. You do need to plan ahead when wearing such a light item in not-yet-spring weather. I was doing a 2.5 hour presentation the evening I decided to wear this, which was good incase I was nervous and sweaty. And you already know my thoughts on the colour. I heart teal.

A Little Bit Rock ‘n’ Roll.

Rock ‘n’ Roll tees have been around forever. I use to collect tees at every rock show I went to and most of them are now bed shirts. This spring, fashion brands are taking their own spin on the rock tee. It’s a bit of a hard edge with a feminine touch when paired with skinny jeans and a tailored blazer. This tee has a bit of a Star Wars vibe and some 80’s inspired text. It’s a husband favourite.

Coloured Denim.

Last year my stack of denim slowly turned into a rainbow. So many great colours for each season and it looks like this spring will be no different. My favourites for winter/fall are wine (shown here), camel and grey. I’m itching to dust off my bright yellow, emerald green, vibrant blue and coral pink… just waiting for the sun to shine and the weather to warm up. Stay tuned. Try introducing a coloured pair of denim into your wardrobe – start with something a bit quiet and work your way up to the screaming neons.

Plain White Tees.

Not just a band – also a fashion statement. I have an addiction to plain white tees. Short sleeve, long sleeve, crew neck, v-neck. A classic, crisp white shirt with a pair of jeans can take you almost anywhere. Dress it up with some heels, a scarf, a great necklace or a clutch. Dress it down with some Ugg boots and a slouchy touque. Invest in some great white tees (and replace them when the armpits turn yellow and the shape is lost) – and the variety of looks you can put together will be endless.

Graphic Tees.

There are some pretty cool graphic tees out there these days (stay tuned for future posts on this). Pairing something a bit edgy with a a more conservative piece helps bring this look straight into the office (well, my office anyways). I love a tee with a saying on it that is only peeking out – people always want to know what it says, but will rarely ever ask.

Love.

Last night I was surprised with a dinner at the restaurant where we got married and a beautiful bracelet from Rubaiyat (best jewellery store in Calgary). My husband secretly planned the night and it was all about love. Our 4 month anniversary and the day before Valentine’s Day. Good thing I was somewhat dressed up enough for the surprise! Happy Love Day!

Famous 5.

Last week I was invited to attend a luncheon celebrating influential women in leadership. The Famous 5 series was held at the Palliser and I was honoured to be included in that room. When trying to decide what to wear, I went for simple and professional (with a pop of colour). I figure you can never go wrong with a classic tailored black blazer.

A Little Bit Rusty.

Fall colours and earthy tones can work for everyone. I love the colour of rust because it acts as a neutral and always works with denim. Rust can also take you right into spring. If it seems a bit too ‘out there’, try introducing it in a simpler way – maybe a nail polish or scarf. See how rust looks against your skin tone (and against your personality) and make sure they are a fit before committing to a bigger piece.

Winter White.

I grew up with some old fashioned fashion rules. Don’t wear white after labour day. Always wear pantyhose if your legs are showing. Your belt and shoes need to match. Don’t mix brown and black. To those I say, ‘screw that & why not?’ Especially the no white after labour day rule. I wear white year round, and this time of year, ‘Winter White’ is one of my favourite colours. It’s softer than stark white, but still adds some light to an otherwise dreary time of year.

Lazy Days.

There are some days (after being ill for a week) that you just throw your hands up and say ‘whatever’ when it comes to how you’re going to present yourself to the world. Lazy days. Days when you just don’t really care. Yes, I know my shoes are moccasins.  Yes, I know they look like slippers. Yes, I know my jeans aren’t skinny. Yes, I went to work like this. Yes, I will try harder tomorrow.
